Climate Change
I'm told that May in Addis Ababa is usually a hot, dry month, and that the rains don't begin until June. This year is different. Every afternoon, the rumbling begins dependably around 3:30, and the downpour is in full force by the time of my 4 o'clock ride home. I'm grateful for SC's competent drivers and fleet of SUVs when it comes time to ford the muddy river that replaces my road each afternoon. Yesterday was particularly ferocious. We all went out to eat with an Ethiopian colleague, and when we returned home that evening, found that we had no electricity. The result: No working from home for anyone, and we sat around with candles and headlamps telling nostalgic stories about the southwest (U.S., that is) for hours instead. This morning - still no power, but it mattered less. Besides the refrigerator harboring the leftover BBQ sheep, we had no need for it.
